Why Meta Ads Generate Poor Quality Leads: What Irish Businesses Should Review

Your Facebook campaign reports 40 leads. The cost looks reasonable. Then you start calling: several people do not answer, some live outside your service area, and others expected something completely different.

Before increasing the budget or replacing every advert, find out where the mismatch begins. The problem could be the offer, the form, the campaign’s optimisation goal or what happens after someone enquires.

Define a useful enquiry

“More leads” is too vague to guide a campaign.

For a fictional kitchen installation business serving Cork, a useful enquiry might come from someone within its service area who is planning a kitchen project and understands the likely price range.

Use a simple qualification record:

Check What to record
Location Can you serve this customer?
Service Does the request match your offer?
Budget Is it workable, unknown or unsuitable?
Contactability Have you reached the person?
Outcome Appointment, quotation, sale or reason lost

Keep “not contacted yet” separate from “unsuitable”. Otherwise, slow follow-up can look like poor advertising.

Make the offer clear before the click

An advert promising “Transform your home for less” leaves plenty of room for misunderstanding.

Explain the service, where it is available and what happens after submitting the form. If you advertise a starting price, it should be accurate, with the relevant conditions visible.

For the kitchen business, “Book a kitchen consultation in Cork” sets a clearer expectation than “Claim your free upgrade”.

Review location settings against the addresses people actually provide. Do not assume a broad audience is automatically the problem: unclear advertising can attract unsuitable enquiries even within a carefully selected audience.

Give the form a useful job

Collecting a name and email address tells you very little about the person’s requirements.

Ask two or three questions that help you respond appropriately, such as the service required, location and intended timescale. Where budget matters, offer sensible ranges and an “I need guidance” option.

Meta’s Higher intent instant form includes a review step so people can confirm their information before submitting. It is worth testing, but it does not guarantee qualified enquiries. See Meta’s instant-form guidance.

A website form gives you space to explain the service before submission. An instant form keeps the enquiry within Meta’s platform. Compare them using qualified enquiries and appointments, rather than assuming either format always wins.

Compare the cost of qualified leads

Consider two fictional campaigns with the same €400 advertising spend:

Result Campaign A Campaign B
Total leads 40 10
Cost per lead €10 €40
Qualified leads 4 6
Cost per qualified lead €100 About €67

Campaign A looks cheaper in a basic report. Campaign B produces more suitable opportunities for the same spend.

These figures illustrate the calculation; they are not Irish market benchmarks or claimed client results. Track appointments and sales too, because qualification alone does not establish profitability.

Check what your tracking actually measures

For website enquiries, confirm that the lead event represents a successful submission. A click on “Send” should not count as a completed enquiry when the form displays an error.

If both browser and server tracking send the same action, have the implementation checked for duplicate reporting. Adding tracking tools without validating the events can make campaign results harder to trust.

For instant-form campaigns, review how leads reach your CRM and how their outcomes are recorded. Meta recommends connecting CRM information to help its systems identify people more likely to convert. Where available and appropriately configured, review the conversion leads performance goal. Read Meta’s lead-ad best practices.

Review follow-up before changing everything

Tell people when and how you will contact them. Assign each enquiry to someone and record the first response time.

Then change one meaningful element at a time: the offer, qualifying questions or form destination. Compare results over a period that allows your normal sales process to happen.

Pause a campaign if it keeps attracting clearly unsuitable enquiries and you cannot identify a workable correction. Increase spending when qualified opportunities and sales justify it.
