Revolut customers experienced disruption to payments and account access on Tuesday, 20 October. At the time checked, Revolut’s Irish status page listed 31 services as partially unavailable, including card payments, transfers, ATM withdrawals and signing in. Business services were also affected. This was broader than an app display problem.
Revolut has said customers’ money and data are safe. That is the company’s assurance during the incident, rather than an independently completed investigation. The evidence available supports a service availability problem; it does not establish that customer deposits have disappeared.
Why did Revolut go down?
Google Cloud confirmed an active incident affecting multiple services in its London region, known as europe-west2. Reuters reported that a person familiar with the matter linked Revolut’s disruption to that Google Cloud incident.
However, identifying an affected infrastructure provider is not the same as proving the underlying technical cause.
The material verified for this article does not establish which component originally failed, what triggered that failure, or precisely how it spread through Revolut’s systems. Claims about a cyberattack, a software deployment, damaged hardware or a failed backup system would therefore go beyond the evidence.
A complete explanation requires an incident report from the companies involved. It should distinguish the initial fault from the reasons services remained disrupted.
How long has the disruption lasted?
Google’s dashboard records the infrastructure incident starting at 23:08 PDT on 19 October. Converted to Irish time, that is 7:08am on 20 October. Its dashboard still showed the incident as active when updated at 12:20pm Irish time—an elapsed period of five hours and 12 minutes.
| Verified milestone | Irish time |
|---|---|
| Google Cloud’s recorded incident start | 7:08am, 20 October |
| Google dashboard update still showing an active incident | 12:20pm |
| Revolut Ireland status checked for this article | Around 12:35pm; 31 services partially unavailable |
The Google timestamps measure the infrastructure incident. They do not prove every Revolut customer lost access at 7:08am or experienced uninterrupted problems for the same duration. Revolut’s page showed partial unavailability, which must not be described as a complete shutdown for every customer.
A confirmed final duration cannot be given while the incident remains unresolved in the verified updates.
Is customers’ money safe?
Three separate questions matter: whether money remains recorded in an account, whether the customer can currently access it, and what protection applies if the bank fails.
Revolut’s statement addresses the first concern by saying money and data remain safe. The disruption demonstrates that access can nevertheless be interrupted. Neither a declined payment nor a failed login, by itself, proves a loss of deposits.
For eligible deposits held with Revolut Bank UAB, Revolut’s Irish deposit insurance information states that Lithuanian deposit insurance generally covers up to €100,000 per depositor, aggregated across deposits with that bank. It is not a separate €100,000 allowance for each account. Joint-account protection applies individually to each depositor, subject to the scheme’s rules.
For example, €90,000 in savings and €20,000 in a current account with the same bank normally produces €110,000 in combined deposits against a €100,000 standard coverage limit. Specific exceptions can apply.
Deposit insurance concerns an eligible bank-failure event. It does not restore an unavailable app or automatically compensate customers for disruption. Customers should check the entity and product named in their own account documents; the bank-deposit limit should not be treated as a blanket guarantee for everything accessible through the Revolut app.
What should customers do now?
Use Revolut’s official Irish status page to check availability. If a payment’s result is uncertain, check its transaction status and ask the merchant before attempting it repeatedly.
Keep receipts, error screenshots and records of any direct costs. When access returns, reconcile pending and completed transactions against purchases and transfers. Report unexplained differences through Revolut’s official support channels.
For essential spending, a separately funded payment method offers a practical contingency. Moving the same Revolut card into another wallet does not create a separate source of funds.
The unresolved questions are the exact root cause, the complete recovery timeline and whether any transactions require correction. Those answers should come from documented updates—not assumptions based on an inaccessible balance screen.
